CAREER ADVICE

We feature here some of the stars of the Indian IT firmament, icons who have soared and made India a force to be reckoned with. We offer below a few thumbnail sketches of the members of the Hall of Fame.

The list is by no means comprehensive,  and if you wish to nominate your own super heroes for this page, please e-mail us at contact@itcareersonline.com

Mehta, Dewang

A familiar face in the media, Dewang Mehta earned the accolade of “Software Evangelist” and “IT Man of the Year” in the late nineties. Dewang Mehta was the President of NASSCOM (India’s National Association of Software and Service Companies), the body that represents software and service companies in India. He lobbied tirelessly with both Indian and foreign governments, and contributed towards placing India on the world stage as an IT superpower. Ever the optimist, he believed that the global IT slowdown which began in early 2001 would not impact severely on India. Towards that end, in April 2001 he led a delegation of IT experts to Australia on a mission to persuade global companies to outsource their IT needs in India. Dewang Mehta died in Australia on April 12, 2001. He was only 39.

Bhatia, Sabeer

His story is the stuff that legends are made of. Our own Hot Male, a household name, co-founder of Hotmail.com and icon to millions of Indians. When he and his partner sold Hotmail to Microsoft, he earned a cool US$400 million. Today there may be several Hotmail clones on the Net, but Hotmail was a first and Sabeer Bhatia was there. Hotmail was launched on July 4, 1996. The rest as they say is history. Sabeer Bhatia is now focusing on his new venture Arzoo.

Premji, Azim

If you think Wipro, think Azim Premji. Time was when stock market valuations vaulted through the roof, so did the wealth of the founder of Wipro Technologies. He was once worth US$35 billion. And counting. The world's richest Indian. His wealth may have declined somewhat from those stratospheric heights. But riches do not faze him. He heads a quality company with very high standards of ethics.

Murthy, Narayan

A trailblazer. His name is synonymous with the company he founded in Bangalore. Infosys Technologies. The company was launched with a seed capital of Rs. 10,000. It seems hard to imagine that Narayan Murthy and his colleagues battled for 18 months to extract a license from a stifling bureaucracy. That was 1981. Today, the company is worth billions. The brand name Infosys is synonymous with transparency and investor-friendliness. And wealth creation for its employees. Stuff that dreams are made of.

Deshpande, Gururaj

"A crackpot who hit the jackpot" is how Gururaj Deshpande once described himself. And he hit the jackpot with Sycamore Networks, the company he heads today. Mind you, he didn't strike it rich the first time. His entrepreneurial venture Coral Networks Corp, a network hardware firm, set up in 1987, ended up a failure. His second venture, Cascade Communications, the company which manufactured Internet equipment was sold to Ascend Communications for $3.7 billion. When the market capitalization of Sycamore soared to US$18 billion, he too joined the super club of billionaire Indians.
